Bat ear correction or otoplasty, is a plastic surgery process done to pull the ears closer to the head. Otoplasty is a common plastic surgery for adults and children with projecting ears. Those with excessively protruding ears can often suffer from embarrassment. When this occurs in childhood, it can cause teasing, psychological problems and impaired confidence. The aim of the surgery is to create a more pronounced fold in the central portion of the ear by remodeling the cartilage. The operative technique will vary depending on your physical features and your surgeon’s methods
Depending on the extent of the ear plastic surgery, bat ear correction surgery may take maximum 1 to 1 1/2 hours. However, please keep in mind that this is only actual surgical time. To ensure the highest standard of personalized patient care, attention to detail and results, Dr.T.Kannan Kumar requires you to spend suitable time both immediately before and after the procedure. Additional time may need to also be taken with children.
Most people are usually up and about within a few hours of cosmetic ear surgery, although you may prefer to stay overnight in the hospital until all the effects of general anesthesia wear off. The patient’s head will be wrapped in a bulky bandage immediately following surgery to promote the best moulding and healing. The ears may throb or ache a little for a few days, but this can be relieved by medication.
After a week, the bulky bandages will be replaced by a lighter head dressing similar to a headband, usually to be worn at night. Stitches are usually removed, or will dissolve, in about a week. Any activity in which the ear might be bent should be avoided for a month or so. Most adults can go back to work about seven days after surgery.
